Scarborough author’s debut novel about expat life in Spain

Carol Ioannou’s book, “Sunny Ever After,” draws on her own experience living in Spain for nearly nine years.

The story follows the main character, Joanne Holland, who decides to follow her dream by moving abroad, leaving behind the North Yorkshire coast and her lover, Paul Marshall.

A playful nod to a scene from Shirley Valentine can be spotted in a moment where Joanne, content with her decision, gazes at the sea.

Mrs. Ioannou started penning her debut novel during the lockdown.

She said: “I started writing, randomly at first, then by late 2021, I realised that I might be able to write a book.

“I am grateful to this book; it got me through lockdown.”

Being part of a group of expat volunteers who managed a little theatre on the Costa del Sol inspired Mrs Ioannou to craft her narrative.

She also notes various sources for her character inspirations.

One of her favourites, Gloria, draws from a brightly coloured butterfly and the 1970s hippie chic fashions.

Joanne finds herself grappling with new and unexpected romantic feelings, being smitten by the mysterious Gerry Coupland, but revelations about his true character deliver an unexpected plot twist.

Mrs Ioannou shared how the story organically evolved as she wrote, saying: “Once started, I couldn’t stop.

“The story took its own path, and I followed.”

Her debut novel promises to be a blend of comedy, romance, and intrigue.
